Google is rolling out a new kind of search tool this year, and it works differently than what most people are used to.
Instead of searching for the same topic over and over, users can ask Google to keep watching it for them. Google calls these Information Agents. Say a homeowner wants to track HVAC rebates in their area or keep an eye on financing offers for a new water heater. Rather than repeating that search every few weeks, they can ask an agent to monitor it and send updates automatically as new information becomes available online.
Information Agents have already begun rolling out to Google AI Ultra subscribers, with broader availability to Google AI Pro users expected over the summer. They aren't yet part of the standard Google Search experience for most people, but they're an important early signal of where search is headed, and worth understanding now rather than after they become more widely used.
The core idea behind good marketing doesn't change. Homeowners still need a website that answers their questions, demonstrates real expertise, and builds trust before they pick up the phone.
What's changing is how that information is discovered, summarized, and reused by AI-powered search.
As AI tools increasingly rely on current information from across the web, outdated content becomes a bigger problem than it used to be. An expired financing offer, an old rebate amount, or a service area that's no longer accurate isn't just a small housekeeping issue anymore. It's the kind of information that could continue appearing in AI-generated answers until it's updated.
That makes keeping your website current less of an occasional task and more of an ongoing one.
The good news is that this doesn't require a completely new marketing strategy. Home service business owners who regularly keep their websites accurate and up to date are already moving in the right direction.
Think about how someone actually shops for a contractor today. Before they call anyone, they might compare equipment, look into financing, check for rebates or tax credits, read up on maintenance, and browse reviews.
Your website touches all of that. Every service page, FAQ, maintenance guide, blog post, and current offer contributes to the overall picture a potential customer—or an AI tool summarizing information—forms about your business.
The more complete and current those pages are, the easier it is for both homeowners and AI-powered search to understand what you do and when to recommend your business.
The next time you're updating your website, or if it's been a while since you've looked closely, here are a few practical things worth checking:
Most of this doesn't require starting from scratch. Updating a page you already have is often more valuable than writing a brand-new one. Technical performance, however, is the exception. Things like site speed and mobile usability are usually larger, one-time improvements rather than quick updates, but they're worth evaluating if your website hasn't been reviewed recently.
It will likely be a while before tools like Information Agents become part of everyday search for most homeowners. But they're an early signal of a broader shift: search is moving beyond answering one question at a time and toward continuously identifying and surfacing the most current information available.
The businesses best positioned for that future won't necessarily be the ones publishing the most content. They'll be the ones consistently keeping their websites accurate, current, and useful.
